Biography:
Fernando Melendez-Vazquez is the manager of the Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) at The American Museum of Natural History.
"I am a marine evolutionary biologist and the Manager of the Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) at the American Museum of Natural History. My research explores how complex traits evolve in fishes, with a particular focus on the evolution of endothermy (warm-bloodedness), biodiversity, and the ecological and genomic processes that drive evolutionary innovation. I am also passionate about STEM education and mentoring the next generation of scientists by making research more accessible and inclusive."
What first inspired you to pursue research or STEM?
Growing up in Puerto Rico, I spent a lot of time exploring the ocean and was fascinated by the incredible diversity of marine life. As I learned more about evolution and biodiversity, I became increasingly curious about why different species evolved the traits they did. That curiosity, combined with mentors who encouraged me to ask questions and pursue research, ultimately inspired me to build a career in STEM.
How did you find your first research opportunity?
I didn't have my first research opportunity until my third year of college. At the time, marine biology research opportunities in Puerto Rico were limited and often reserved for graduate students. I was taking a fish biology course with only three other students, and my professor happened to be studying gut protein content in fishes that semester. I asked if I could join his lab, and he gave me the opportunity. Most of my time was spent cleaning fish intestines and removing, well, fish poop, but I was incredibly grateful. That experience taught me that every research project has unglamorous tasks, and that those first opportunities often come to those who are willing to ask and put in the work.
What was the biggest challenge you faced entering the research world?
One of the biggest challenges was simply finding an opportunity to get involved in research. As an undergraduate in Puerto Rico, marine biology research opportunities were limited and often reserved for graduate students. It wasn't until my third year that I was able to join a lab after asking my fish biology professor if I could help with his research. Like many students, I started with basic tasks, but I was grateful for the opportunity because it taught me that every contribution is valuable and opened the door to a career in research. Also, not having a scientist I could talk to about my questions and what the career was like was also one of the biggest challenges.
What surprised you most about working in a research environment?
I was most surprised by how collaborative research is. Before joining a lab, I imagined scientists working independently, but I quickly realized that research thrives on teamwork, discussions, and learning from people with different backgrounds and expertise. I was also surprised by how much of science involves persistence. Experiments fail, hypotheses change, and that's all part of the process rather than a sign that you're doing something wrong.
Can you share a meaningful moment or accomplishment from your experience?
One of the most meaningful moments in my journey has been seeing how far it has taken me. I began as an undergraduate in Puerto Rico, where marine biology research opportunities were limited, and through the support of incredible mentors and a lot of perseverance, I eventually earned my Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Today, as the Manager of the Science Research Mentoring Program at the American Museum of Natural History, I have the privilege of mentoring students and providing them with the research experiences and guidance that I wish I had when I was starting out. Helping students discover their passion for science has become just as rewarding as making discoveries of my own.
What advice would you give to high school students hoping to get involved in research?
Don't wait until you feel "ready" to reach out. Most researchers are happy to hear from curious and motivated students, even if you have little or no experience. Be proactive, ask questions, and don't be discouraged if you hear "no" a few times, finding the right opportunity often takes persistence. Most importantly, stay curious. Research isn't about knowing all the answers; it's about asking good questions and being excited to learn.
How has your research experience shaped your goals or identity as a scientist/student?
My research experience has helped me realize that being a scientist doesn't mean changing who you are. Early on, I felt pressure to fit a certain image of what a scientist should sound or act like. Over time, I learned to embrace my identity as a Latino scientist and to communicate my research in a way that reflects who I am. Whether I'm giving a scientific presentation or mentoring students, I want people to see that science is strengthened by diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and voices. That realization has shaped not only the way I conduct research, but also the kind of mentor and scientist I strive to be.
