On July 17, 1902, a 25-year-old engineer named Willis Carrier submitted the drawings for what would become the world's first modern air-conditioning system. Interestingly, he wasn’t even trying to keep people cool. Instead, he was trying to solve a printing problem. Specifically, the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company in Brooklyn, New York was struggling with a recurring issue: humidity in their factory caused paper to expand and contract, ink to misalign, and printed colors to blur.
Carrier's invention, which was initially designed to control humidity rather than temperature, eventually transformed daily life for people across the world.
The original problem
At the time, Carrier was a recent Cornell engineering graduate working for the Buffalo Forge Company. The printing company’s real enemy, he realized, wasn’t heat — but humidity. Excess moisture in the air caused the paper stock to absorb water unevenly, expanding and contracting between print runs in ways that ruined the precise color registration needed for high-quality printing. Carrier designed a system that used a process of cooling air to a specific dew point, which removed excess moisture by condensation, and then carefully controlling the resulting humidity level. The fact that the air came out noticeably cooler, too, was initially treated as a side effect.
Carrier's system worked by passing air over coils filled with cooled water, a process that is now known as the basic refrigeration cycle. In 1906, he filed for a patent for what he called an "Apparatus for Treating Air,” laying out the fundamental engineering principles: controlling temperature, humidity, air circulation, and air quality. These components are still a critical part of air conditioning and climate systems today.
Implementation
For roughly the first two decades after Carrier's invention, air conditioning was used almost exclusively in industrial and manufacturing settings where humidity control was a production necessity rather than a comfort feature. The shift toward cooling spaces for human comfort began in the 1920s, notably in movie theaters, which used air conditioning as a marketing draw to pack audiences into theaters during sweltering summer months. This eventually gave rise to the tradition of the summer blockbuster being partly a function of theaters being one of the only reliably cool public spaces in a city.
Residential and widespread commercial air conditioning didn't become commonplace until after World War II, as the technology became smaller, cheaper, and more reliable, and as postwar prosperity made home cooling systems newly affordable to the middle class.
How air conditioning reshaped the world
It is difficult to overstate how profoundly air conditioning has reshaped human geography and society. Population growth in the American Sunbelt — in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and the broader American South and Southwest — was substantially enabled by air conditioning, which made year-round life in hot, humid climates practical and comfortable in a way it simply hadn't been before.
Even more, office productivity, food storage, data center operation, and even military and aerospace engineering all depend fundamentally on the climate-control principles Carrier first laid out in 1902. The company he founded, Carrier Corporation, remains one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the world today.
