On April 12, 1981, Space Shuttle Columbia lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen on a mission designated STS-1. This was a moment filled with tension and anxiety. After all, Columbia was the first spacecraft in history to be launched into orbit on its very first flight with a human crew aboard, with no prior unmanned test flight. Everything about the vehicle was novel, and being tested for the first time with two human lives directly at risk.
Why this was different
Every spacecraft that had carried humans before the Shuttle was fundamentally disposable. After a single use, the capsules would splash down in the ocean and were either destroyed or retired to museums. The Space Shuttle was completely different. Instead it functioned as a reusable spacecraft that could launch like a rocket, operate in orbit, and then glide back to Earth and land on a runway like an airplane, ready to be refurbished and flown again.
This reusability was meant to dramatically reduce the cost of spaceflight, attempting to transform space travel into a regular transportation system, a stark comparison to the exorbitantly expensive missions prior. The Shuttle's design included a winged orbiter (the part that carried astronauts and returned to Earth), an external fuel tank, and two solid rocket boosters that were jettisoned and recovered from the ocean after launch.
The risk of STS-1
The decision to launch Columbia with a crew on its very first flight was a striking departure from how NASA had approached every previous human spaceflight program. Its thermal protection system was composed of thousands of individually shaped ceramic tiles covering the orbiter's exterior, designed to protect it from the extreme heat of atmospheric reentry. However, it had never been flight-tested under real conditions. Several tiles, in fact, were found to be missing or damaged after launch, a problem that, decades later, would prove catastrophic for a different shuttle, Columbia itself, during its final mission in 2003.
Despite the risks, STS-1 was a success. Columbia orbited Earth 36 times over two days before John Young piloted it to a smooth runway landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California, demonstrating that a spacecraft really could fly to orbit and glide home like an aircraft.
The Shuttle program's legacy
The Space Shuttle program flew 135 missions between 1981 and its retirement in 2011. It built the International Space Station, launched and serviced the Hubble Space Telescope, deployed satellites, and conducted thousands of scientific experiments in microgravity. It also experienced two devastating losses: the Challenger disaster in 1986, caused by an O-ring failure in cold weather conditions, and the Columbia disaster in 2003, caused by damage to the heat shield from foam insulation that struck the wing during launch. Fourteen astronauts died across the two accidents.
The Shuttle program never achieved the cost savings originally envisioned, as the vehicles were far more expensive and complex to maintain and refurbish than initially projected. No matter, it is still one of the most technically ambitious flying machines ever built, and its retirement in 2011 paved the way for the current era of commercial spaceflight companies like Space.
